Did you know?
- The UF Student Section of the American Nuclear Society is one of the oldest in the country, dating back to 1960!
- Formal Nuclear Engineering classes at UF started just two years earlier in 1958, although for graduate students only.
- The UFTR first went critical in May 1959.
- UF’s student section won the very first ANS Glasstone Award for best student section — in 1970!
- Speaking of the Glasstone Awards, UF’s student section has won it 12 times!
- The first UF Nuclear Engineering undergraduate courses were offered in 1966.
- Dr. James Tulenko, former chairman of UF’s Nuclear Science and Engineering Department, served as the President of ANS from 2004-2005.
- Before him, Dr. M. Jack Ohanian, who taught as a faculty member at UF for 38 years, served as the President of ANS from 1990-1991.
- More recently, Dr. Nils Diaz, a UF NE graduate and faculty member, served as the Chairman of the NRC from 2003-2006.
- Dr. José Reyes, co-founder of NuScale, completed his undergraduate degree in nuclear engineering at UF. Dr. Reyes is a fellow of ANS.
- Yet another notable UF NE alumni is Glen Watford, the current chief engineer of GE Hitachi.
